My dear Midnight Shadow, making the impossible possible with sound is half of my job description. I would be a poor audio-engineer if I could not take even the most distasteful sounds and make them passable. Not that any part of this podcast is distasteful, of course. I enjoy this job thoroughly. Even if I have to listen to entire episodes 5 times.

On the topic of Hasbro merchandise aimed at Bronies, it’ll probably go like this. Looking over the 2011 Comicon poster, they obviously are watching the fandom CLOSELY, as this is almost encoded with fanon content. It would be one thing to just include Derpy Hooves, but Doctor Whoof, DJ PON3/Vinyl Scratch, Octavia (alone of the GGG quartette), Lyra & Bon-Bon together yet seperated from the other background mares, the 3 Shadowbolts, but only Spitfire & Soren of the Wonderbolts. They know us and they know our tastes. But dispite the brag, swag for bronies would still need to have potential general sales to satisfy the marketing department.
Given their pension for “thriftiness” (I’m being kind here) the smart money would be on some figures that wouldn’t tax the current molds and tools and would require little retooling to produce. Derpy could easily be done with current patterns (witness the Derpy customs being made last year) but a crosseyed pony might be a tough sell. Dr.Whoof is right out for trademark reasons (BBC will tolerate him as a background injoke in the show, but only to a point), which leaves Octavia and DJ PON3, who have a lot of social reasons that make them a smart pick. Girls toys have been under assault from various quarters for being too girly or not stressing positive female role models. Both these gals are no silly fillies, but rather professional working women, and are a godsend to marketing.
As far as HASBRO cracking down on custom figure makers or artisans, you need look no further than two of their other franchises; Transformers and G.I.Joe. There have been cottage industries for better than two decades catering to the collectors market with not only replacement parts, but upgrades and correction parts to accurize your figures. This is lump into the ‘Promotions” category and has not only been tolerated but actively encouraged. The only thing that has been a topic of some speculation in the comics field is whether or not an MLP comic or magazine will happen, and if so, who gets it. In times past (the 80′s) the obvious company was Marvel, who Transformers and G.I.Joe comics were wild runaway hits, and several other properties ended up in their STAR COMICS imprint. Currently though, Marvel is owned by Disney, who have made it VERY clear that they’re not interested in producing outside properties. Toon Boom Studios, who until recently were doing a line of Disney Afternoon books are a possibility, and they have some really talent people who have experience with kids comics.
Sadly, given the sorry state of comics and publishing in general, these might be a dicey proposition that Hasbro passes on… unless of course one of the Euro divisions is tapped to do them, then they’re imported to the US (Disney fuctioned like this in the 70′s & 80′s). Something to think about. Keep up the good work!
